Peer support group
Clients meet with their primary counsellors on a weekly basis to discuss progress toward personal goals and current issues and concerns and to work towards and review the mutually agreed upon recovery plan.
Advocacy and Referrals:
Staff can assist in finding community resources, providing support and, when necessary, acting as a liaison and advocate for clients.
Stabilization is designed to allow clients an opportunity to discuss any immediate concerns or issues related to their recovery. As a group, we address challenges experienced in early recovery and learn about basic relapse prevention techniques including identifying warning signs and managing triggers to drink/drugs. Clients will learn some of the basic post acute withdrawal symptoms and learn about symptom management.
Explorations is a community based group which is designed to assist clients in preparing for treatment. It is a joint project of Crossroads Centre, St. Joseph's Care Group and Thunder Bay Counselling Centre. Group topics include coping with early withdrawal, spirituality, handling stress, communication and explores the value of attending treatment.
Pre-Treatment Discussion Group:
Pre- Treatment discussion is a gender specific group which is designed to assist clients in preparation for treatment. Topics are selected by group members and include: motivation, change, myths and facts of treatment, overcoming barriers and finding support. The facilitator is available to assist clients with any requirements of treatment such as TB Tests, completing paper work and making transportation arrangements.
Pre-treatment Handling Stress:
Handling stress teaches clients to identify stress within their lives and gives them basic tools to deal with the stress. Clients will be able to recognize the signs and symptoms of stress and the related health/mental health consequences and will learn ways to reduce stress that are practical, affordable and realistic.
In group, clients will learn about different aspects of 12 step program, including powerlessness, sponsorship, the Big Book, honesty and daily inventories. Step Skills also illustrates how the steps would be useful in other aspect of client’s lives.
In recreation, clients will learn various positive alternatives to alcohol/drugs and will be exposed to different recreational activities. Many recreational options are available to the general public which are no/low cost, which clients can access independently. The goal of recreation is for clients to show an increase in wellness and self esteem through program participation. All recreational activities are safe and noncompetitive and encourage the development of new interests, strengths and hobbies.
How to apply:
To qualify for pre-treatment services, you must meet the following criteria:
Alcohol and drug free for five (5) days
Have a confirmed treatment date at a short-term residential program
Willing to comply with the Terms of Residency
Have a current addictions assessment
If you would like to apply, please call our office to obtain an application package or download one from this website and fax it in. Once we review your application, our Intake Worker will contact you to discuss your application. The intake interview can take place in person or over the phone. A decision on your application will usually be made during your intake interview and you will be provided with a letter of acceptance.
